The first is quality. Some brands are just known for quality over others. Once you are in business for 80–130 years like some luxury brands you automatically get attached to quality even if it’s not true in every category. For example, Gucci and Ferragamo shoes are amazing in quality as that is what they are known for. Ready to wear…. Not so much.
Second is the creative direction. Some brands keep their course and some clients love that. Chanel and Hermes are examples. Some brands have an outspoken artistic direction and clients gravitate toward that. Alexander McQueen and Gucci are examples of that.
Lastly is marketing. People want things that other people may not be able to get. Sometimes they settle. 250k handbags, 15k suits, and 50k jewelry are all well and good but where does most of the money come from? The $2k handbags, 2k suits, and 1k jewelry pieces are offered as alternatives.
